Software updates. Some love them, others hate them with a passion, especially those who own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone that receives an update every month.
Updates help keep devices secure and bring new features and improvements. But installing them can be a nuisance as you cannot use the device while the update is being installed.
Or, well, that used to be the case, but not anymore, at least on Samsung's newer devices. Since 2025, new flagship Galaxy phones and tablets have come with support for seamless updates. So have some mid-range devices.
You can keep using your Galaxy while an update installs
In simple terms, seamless updates let your device keep running its current software while the updated version is installed separately in the background. You can continue chatting with friends, watching videos, browsing the web, or using other apps while that happens.
Once the update is ready, you will be asked to restart the device. That restart switches it over to the updated software and takes about as long as a regular reboot. You no longer have to sit through an installation progress screen before you can get back to using your phone or tablet.
The installation itself can still take a while, especially if it's a major One UI / Android upgrade. But you don't have to set your device aside for most of that time, and you can save the restart for a convenient moment.
Samsung first introduced seamless updates on the Galaxy A55 in 2024, before bringing them to the Galaxy S25 series in 2025. Mid-range phones such as the Galaxy A36, Galaxy A56 and newer devices in these lineups support them as well.
Unfortunately, older flagships such as the Galaxy S24 series still use the traditional installation process. Updating them to a newer version of One UI doesn't give them seamless updates.
But if you've upgraded to a newer Galaxy and still dismiss update notifications because you don't want to be without your phone, you may be doing so out of habit.
The next time that monthly update notification appears, let it install while you carry on using your phone. You only need to find a convenient moment for the restart.
